Raymond CuijpersUnited Dock Box

The ‘United Dock Box’ is the last but one container in the ART-on-a-BOX project. Artist and former professional football player Raymond Cuijpers painted his container during the ‘WK Amsterdam’. This football tournament, in which Amsterdam based nationalities battle against each other,  takes place each year. Port of Amsterdam is sponsor of the event. For ART-on-a-BOX, Cuijpers created life-sized
portraits of dockworkers; the labourers, the foremen, the toiling midfielders of the port. In the early 1990s Raymond Cuijpers  was making a career as a professional footballer, while also studying at the Academy of Arts in Maastricht. Initially, the main theme of his work revolved around football. This element gradually disappeared from his paintings. But the action, the movement remains clearly visible, so in fact the footballer never left the artist.
