The Amsterdam artist Rob Schotsman produces mostly commissioned artworks. Port of Amsterdam asked him to paint the eighth ART-on-a-BOX container.
Rob his oeuvre covers various areas. From detailed pen- and inkdrawings and painted backdrops to life-sized installation art. The common thread running through his artistic output is realistic figurative imagery that evokes a sense of alienation.
For ART-on-a-BOX was chosen for the skylines of Amsterdam and Shanghai, as well as picture postcard-like images of two port cities. Both port cities have close ties with each other and in 2008 a new container liner service became operational between the cities.
The container was shown for the first time during the Terminal Operators Conference in the RAI Amsterdam in June 2008. This is where Rob finished his container completely.
